DUCKS LW KARIYA STARTS SKATING, HOPES TO RETURN NEXT WEEK

Left wing Paul Kariya, the budding superstar of the Mighty Ducks
of Anaheim, resumed skating Wednesday and hopes to return to the
lineup for an Oct. 30 home game against Vancouver. Kariya, 22,
has missed the first nine games of the season with an abdominal
strain that forced him to pull out of the World Cup of Hockey.
The Ducks have struggled without Kariya, going 1-6-2. They are
last in the Pacific Division with four points, seven behind
Colorado. Kariya tied for seventh in the NHL in scoring last
season -- his second in the league -- with 50 goals and 58
assists while playing in all 82 games. He also won the Lady Byng
Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly play.
