Just thought I'd pass on some information I read in the paper
yesterday regarding some of the seniors and their plans.
 
Jeff Tory is apparently going to try out for the Canadian National
Team this September.  It's Tory's intention to play for the Canadian
National Team this season and return to Maine for 1997-8 season.  Of
course this all depends on whether or not he makes the team, but I
thought it was an interesting avenue to take.
 
Something else I hadn't considered is that some players, even
non-seniors, might choose (or be pushed by coaches) to take their
red-shirt season.  In otherwords, if a senior has his redshirt year,
and wants to take it, they could sit out next season and still be
eligible.
 
Dan Shermerhorn and Blair Allison were both in this article as well,
with no real news to report.  Both are considering options, but at
least for Shermerhorn graduation is a big key, as is scholarships.
Shermerhorn and Allison both talked about the exchange rate killing
Canadian students and that in order to attend college they need their
scholarships.
 
Shermerhorn said transfering of credits is also a big key because he
wants to graduate.  Shermerhorn has been Hockey East All-Acadmeic
Honor Roll player all three seasons.
 
Shermerhorn says redshirting is not an option for him because of his
age, 24.  Allison has already used his year I believe.
 
Tory made a suggestion that some players still might not choose to
leave.  Tory said Maine has the best coaching staff available (Walsh,
Cronin, Standbrook, etc) and that if a player wants to play in the
pros this is one of the best places to be.
 
A lot of interesting tidbits.. it will be interesting to see how
these play out, but the Tory piece is certainly interesting to me,
because the way he was involved in the violations, but also that he
wants to return to Maine.  Certainly a return by Tory in 1997-8 would
be a large boost for that team.
