Eric Weinrich is hanging em up and will join the Portland Pirates staff. I
think it's more than a fair statement to say Weinrich was a solid NHL
player. Anyone who can hang around for 18 years had to know what he was
doing.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- The Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League
said Monday that veteran defenseman Eric Weinrich is joining the coaching
staff of the club's affiliate in Portland.
Weinrich, a Maine native who lives in Yarmouth, becomes an assistant coach
for the Pirates after announcing his retirement as a player who logged 18
years in the NHL.
Weinrich was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the second
round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. Now 39, he played with Boston, Chicago,
Hartford, Montreal, New Jersey, Philadelphia, St. Louis and most recently
Vancouver.
He played in 1,157 NHL games scoring 388 points -- 70 goals, 318 assists.
"It was a childhood dream to play in the NHL and to play 18 years was
unexpected and I have no regrets. I was fortunate in every year I played
and extra fortunate to fall into my position with the Pirates and the
timing couldn't have been any better," Weinrich said in a statement.
Before turning pro, Weinrich spent three seasons at the University of
Maine from 1985 to 1988.
