    Subject: Arethusa--Sue Gawler

    Hi, Sue,
Stan and I were recently in Piscataquis County at Cliff Lake. We canoed on Lower Soper POnd. On the sides of the inlets and the outllets we found Arethusa in flower. On the outlet we found Calapogon and Arethusa. We counted more that 70 and gave up counting.
Then we canoed the Leadbetter Pond and found a huge sphanum bog on the left branch of the inlet. Guess it is probably between the two inlet branches. Lots of red sphagnum. Arethusa in flower there near the shore and at the edge of the bog. We noticed a lot of Scirpus hudsoniana (sp?) in association with the Arethusa, but not all scirpus patches had arethusa.

The Arethusas are a delight to see. So tiny and lovely. Their smallness reminds of Calypsos.
Think it was Rob Baldwin who says he did some work for you. He has been checking "my" vernal pools.
Hope all is well with you. Gale Flagg
