Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve's Plant Stewardship Index - A Summary

Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve (BHWP) has broadened its horizons and is

reaching beyond its 134-acre site to help protect and manage local plant

habitats. With the use of BHWP’s plant database, and the assistance of

experts from the Delaware Valley Region of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the

Preserve has developed the Plant Stewardship Index. This analytical tool will

assist and educate land stewards and practitioners to monitor and evaluate

the plants and habitats they protect and manage. By using this Index, you

will be able to evaluate the relative ecological quality of each plant and

plant community on a given property as well as calculate an overall

standardized rating for the site. Similar tools have been accepted and

implemented elsewhere, based on the Floristic Quality Assessment Index

(FQAI) created by Floyd Swink and Gerould Wilhelm in the 1970’s. But this is

the first time a FQAI has been created for the Delaware Valley Region with a

focus on educating professionals and the general public alike

The Plant Stewardship Index database rates approximately 900 of the plants

found in the piedmont plant communities of the Delaware River Basin in

Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The database includes native and naturalized

plants, selected threatened and endangered plants, and invasive plants, and

shows the likelihood of their occurrence in various habitats. Users can

assess the relative ecological quality of each plant and plant community on

a given property, and also calculate an overall standardized ratio
