Help Us Determine Whether Burningbush is Invasive in Maine

The University of Maine, in conjunction with the U. of Connecticut and U. of
Vermont, recently received a Federal grant to pursue education about and
documentation of non-native invasive plant species on a regional basis. One
of the Maine team's goals for 2006 is documentation of one potentially
invasive species, burningbush (Euonymus alatus, formerly E. alata),
throughout the entire state. We do not know yet if burningbush is truly
invasive in Maine, but we hope you will help us find out. Our first step is
to identify places where it appears to have escaped from cultivation and
become established in natural areas, map these sites with GPS, and assess
local environmental conditions. If you'd like to help, please fill out the
information listed below and send it to Jennifer D'Appollonio at
[log in to unmask] We will contact you for directions to your
sighting and to determine if we need landowner permission to access the
site. The information you provide to us about burningbush in Maine will
assist in making informed decisions about its invasive status and potential
management issues. Thank you!
