#13 DENVER USES BIG THIRD PERIOD TO OVERCOME MICHIGAN TECH

DENVER, Colo. -- The 13th-ranked Denver Pioneers used a five-goal
third-period to beat the Michigan Tech Huskies, 7-2, in Western
Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the Magness
Arena.

Denver had a 2-1 advantage after the opening period. Jeff Drummond
staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead at 7:10 as he beat Tech netminder Cam
Ellsworth low to the glove side on a two-on-one. Just after Tech's
Colin Murphy hit the crossbar, Kevin Doell scored the first of his
four goals to make it 2-0 with 5:01 left in the stanza. Junior
forward Brett Engelhardt got the Huskies back in the game just :36
after Doell's goal as he fooled DU netminder Adam Berkoel from the
right faceoff circle and beat him between the legs. Clay Wilson and
Brandon Schwartz drew assists on the play.

Tech evened the game on a four-on-three power play goal at 6:48 of
the second period. Colin Murphy faked a slap shot from the right
faceoff circle and threw it across to Engelhardt who one-timed it
into a wide open net. It was 2-2 after 40 minutes.

The third period was all Denver. Lukas Dora put Denver ahead for good
at 2:38 as he beat Ellsworth from the short side about 12 feet out.
The Pioneers also got three goals by Doell and one by Kevin Ulanski.

Ellsworth finished with 27 saves, while Berkhoel had 16 stops.

The two teams finish the series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. (MST) in Denver.

NOTES: Junior Brett Engelhardt recorded his third two-goal game of
the season. Engelhardt also took over the team lead in goals and now
has 15 on the year . . . Tech hit three posts in the game, including
Colin Murphy in the first period and Greg Amadio and Frank Werner in
the third period.
