The Foster's Daily Democrat (Dover, NH) gives the following details
about the goal scored by Jim Tortorella, then goaltender for U.Maine.

"Tortorella attended the University of Maine and was a member of the
first Black Bear hockey squad in 1977. He was [a] four-year starter
in goal for Maine and on December 28, 1980 he became the only goalie
in college hockey to score a goal.

"Tortorella said he writed a shot on net against vasby (Sweden) at the
RPI invitational in Troy, N.Y., and to his amazement had it go past
        Vasby's goalie.

"The place went crazy," he said. Tortorella said he doesn't believe
the feat has been duplicated. [end Foster's account].

Perhaps somebody with a history at RPI can give a more personal
recollection. I was an avid Maine fan while I was there, but
honestly cannot recall any details of the event. More than likely
I was home for Christmas, and missed the call by Maine's great
radio voice Gary Thorne. (By the way, I'm still a Maine fan, but
being employed by UNH, and being also a graduate of Wisconsin, I
have to temper my enthusiasm for any one of my favorite teams, so
as not to cause personal psychological distress and internal conflict)
Go Black Bears, Go Badgers, Go Wildcats.
