Please join the Maine GIS User Group (MEGUG) on June 10 as we welcome Claire Enterline of the Maine Department of Marine Resources and Dr. Tora Johnson of UMaine at Machias for a virtual lunch & learn event!

Claire Enterline will present the background and broad organization of the Maine Climate Council, and the timeline associated with the activities of the supporting Working Groups. She will outline the Coastal and Marine Working Group strategies, highlighting those with mapping and spatial components, and discuss how they will contribute to the Council's overarching goals. Dr. Johnson will discuss the work of the Community Resilience Working Group, review and answer questions about their recommendations as they relate to the geospatial data and issues, and outline next steps.

About the speakers:

Claire Enterline is the Research Coordinator at the Maine Coastal Program in the Department of Marine Resources. She provides technical leadership regarding sampling methodology, data analysis, and reporting. She works with coastal managers at the local, state, regional, and federal level to translate scientific analysis into best management practices and management plans. She is an active member and past chair of the Northeast Regional Ocean Council (NROC) Habitat Classification and Ocean Mapping subcommittee. Current projects include the Maine Coastal Mapping Initiative, a project to map and describe marine benthic habitat, a salt marsh system-wide monitoring program, and development of the CoastWise, an approach to restoring tidal flow at restrictions using voluntary, standardized (yet adaptive), efficient, and climate-resilient best practices. She is a working group member of the Climate Council's Coastal and Marine Working Group.

Dr. Tora Johnson is Director of the Geographic Information Systems Laboratory at UMaine at Machias where she also serves as Chair of the Division of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Also a writer, Tora's award-winning book, Entanglements: The Intertwined Fates of Whales and Fishermen, was released in 2005. Her research focuses on supporting sustainable and prosperous rural communities and inspiring college aspirations among rural youth. She serves on the Community Resilience, Public Health, and Emergency Management Working Group of the Maine Climate Council.
