Graduate Teaching Assistantship in Geographic Information Systems

University of Maine/ University of Maine at Machias

Position Description:

The University of Maine at Machias (UMM) GIS Laboratory seeks a graduate
teaching assistant (master’s or PhD) beginning in Fall 2020 as a teaching
assistant and/ or instructor of geographic information systems courses
through UMM. The University of Maine at Machias is a regional campus of the
University of Maine, located in the beautiful Downeast Region. Our
award-winning GIS program is growing, we seek a graduate student to help us
build the program and support quality instruction. The student will gain
extensive experience in teaching and curriculum development in
project-based, problem-based GIS instruction (both online and on-campus).
They will participate in developing new curriculum for our expanding
environmental GIS program and collaborate with GIS faculty across the state
through the Maine Geospatial Institute. The successful candidate is
strongly encouraged to develop independent research questions related to
GIS instruction or community or environmental applications of GIS.
Depending on research interests and qualifications, the student may choose
to enroll in the UMaine Spatial Information Science and Engineering

Desired Qualifications:

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, or a related
field. An M.S. is not required, but is preferred. The successful candidate
will display a strong interest in GIS applications and instruction in
higher education. Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and applied GIS
experience are required. Computer programming skills (esp. Python or R) are
a plus.
