The temperatures are still a little too chilly, but the arts scene is certainly heating up in Orono! Here's some of what's been happening, as well as some upcoming events:

Arts News:
Congratulations to Orono Middle School's brand new show choir, "Riot Sound!" The group performed at the District Festival just before break and earned a sensational 95 and 96 out of 100 points! Now they are headed to State-level competition, which
will take place at Stearns High School on March 27. Some lucky members of the community got to see this talented, energy-packed group of singers and dancers at their open dress rehearsal and their Orono Arts Cafe sneak preview a few weeks ago.
Perhaps they can be talked into a return engagement?! A special round of applause for faculty members Cami Carter and Terry Henry, who created this opportunity for OMS students!

Upcoming Arts Events:
Thursday, March 5, 7:00p.m. --
Orono High School's award-winning drama program will present "The Revenger's Tragedy" on Thursday, March 5, 7:00p.m. in the OHS/OMS cafe. This one-act play dates from the early 17th century and deals with the perpetual themes of love, desire,
jealousy, and, of course, revenge. It was written by Shakespeare contemporary Thomas Middleton; additional material for this production has been written by OHS student Tom Boss and director Christopher Luthin. Ticket prices are $3 for students and
seniors, $5 for all others. Earnings from admissions and refreshment sales support the OHS drama program. Following Thursday's performance, the students will take their production to Class B regional competition in Maine's Drama Festival,
performing at noon on Saturday at Brewer Community School.

Monday, March 9, 7:00p.m. --
The next meeting of the Orono Schools Coalition for the Arts will be held Monday, March 8, at 7:00p.m. in the vestry of the Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street. (Please enter this ground-floor room through the side door on Juniper St.)
We'll be discussing arts scholarships, fundraisers, and other topics, so please plan to spend an hour learning how you can help support our students' talents and aspirations!

Wednesday, March 11, 6:30p.m. --
The Orono Schools string program will present its All Schools Orchestra Concert at Hauck Auditorium at the University of Maine on Wednesday, March 11, at 6:30p.m. Witness what happens when talent and hard work come together for musicians in grades
4-12, under the baton of director Waldo Caballero. You will be wowed! The concert is free; earnings from raffle ticket and water bottle sales support our schools' string program.

Friday, March 13, 7:00p.m. --
The Orono Arts Cafe celebrates the luck of the Irish and lots more at the Keith Anderson Community House, Friday March 13. Open-mic sign-up begins at 6:30, and the show starts at 7:00. Catch a glimpse of favorite local performers as well as rising
talent, including some of our favorite award-winning performers! Maybe you fit into one of those categories! Admission is $3 for all; performers get a free root beer float or other treat. Earnings from admission and refreshment sales support arts
programs and scholarships.

Saturday, March 14, 8:00p.m.
The Orono Contraband has been a lively presence supporting school arts through their performance at the Orono Arts Cafe. Now they are back with toe-tapping tunes for their regular Second-Saturday Contradance, Saturday, March 14 at the Keith
Anderson Community House. A refresher/beginner class starts at 7:30p.m.; you'll be ready and rarin' to go by 8:00. Caller John McIntyre will join musicians Anthony, Sam, and Ryu this month. There will be a "halftime show" and surprises! There is
a fee for this event. Please look for oronocontraband on facebook to learn more.
