Thanks, Tim.  I was going to write that answer but I felt I might have
been starting at too basic a level for Mercedes.
By the way, does anyone have an email for Rob Kenner, editor at large for
Vibe and Hugh Kenner's son?

Pound started writing The Cantos around World War I and continued to
compose more cantos throughout his life. They were published in groups.
Sometimes 5 or 10 years went by before the next group was published.
Some of the last cantos were composed in the 1960s.
