Dear Bob,
If you go to Jefferson and/or Mussolini, chapter XXIX KUNG, page 113 in the Liveright edition (1970) you see the MAKE IT NEW characters and underneath in italics Pound's explanation: "The first ideogram (on the right) shows the fascist axe for the clearing away of rubbish (left half) the tree, organic vegetable renewal."
This was what Pound read into it. Sinologists may disagree. It was good to see you in Rome, and you've probably seen your picture in my conference album in Picasa. Here's the link again: http://picasaweb.google.com/wb1935/EPIC2009#
All the best,
Walter

Cordial Poundians,

Does anyone know if Pound ever offered an interpretation of the
pictographic elements represented in the character "hsin" (53/265) and,
if so, would you kindly share the details and source of the information?

Many thanks,
Bob Hughes
