The Nanooks skated past the Mavericks last night with a six-goal margin
which began in the first period with Sean Ulrich's natural hat trick.
Also scoring a hat trick was Wayne Sawchuk, another of UAF's seven seniors
this year. My guess is that the team decided to give all the outgoing players
a chance at a hat trick this weekend because they made a concentrated effort
to pass to the seniors whenever possible and to wait until they were in
scoring position to make a move towards the net.
The first period was relatively penalty-free except for a couple assessed
against the Mavericks, but the rest of the game was an exercise in penalty
box stuffing. I lost track of how many were assessed to each team, but I
heard on the radio after the game that MSU had 15 (!) power-play chances
throughout the course of the game. Folks, in my book that's a LOT of
penalties.
