With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the Post-
Season Tournament contests. For Contest #1, in which the later rounds
were weighted more than the earlier ones, the overall winner is...
Nick Markham
whose 212 points beat runner-up Matt Sullivan by 15. Congratulations,
Nick, and we all bow to your (luck) superior (luck) prognosticating
(luck) skills (blind luck). As for your humble contest administrator,
the less said about my picks the better -- except to note that I managed
to finish behind two people who didn't even submit picks for some of
the tourneys. (See, I told you that would have been better left unsaid)
As for the individual conference winners...
Matt Sullivan's 61 points were good for first place in the ECACHL.
First place in Hockey East went to Craig Powers with 42 points.
The CCHA title went to Mark Lewin with 56 points.
Jim Dixon and Tony Buffa finished tied atop the WCHA with 49 points each.
Jim wins the title on the first tie-breaker, as he nailed the score of
the championship game.
Nick Markham topped Atlantic Hockey with a score of 44 points.
From last week's update, Jim Dixon won the CHA race in a tiebreaker, with
12 points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 4-2) to be 3-1,
you would get two points; if you picked 1-0, you would get five points;
and if you picked 5-4, you would get three points. Obviously, the lower
the point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 3-2.
For the CHA (from last week), the championship game score was 5-4.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
