I've heard one theorist on the subject opine that using non-athletic money 
is actually better for the athlete and the institution, because athletic 
money is relatively restricted.  But other money - for example, Union uses 
a pot of money tagged for 'campus diversity' to expand the pool of 
left-handed slapshots on campus - because it doesn't come under the 
athletic restrictions, can, say, exceed the dollar amount that athletic 
scholarships are restricted to.*
