The University of British Columbia hosts a holiday tournament which this
year features Mount Royal College, the University of Alberta, Yale, and of
course UBC.

The first game, played in front of a very sparse crowd, had the Golden
Bears beat Mt Royal 5-2.

In the nightcap the Ivy League faced off against Canada West. At the
sixteen second mark Yale's Jason Noe was whistled off for tripping. UBC's
power play was ineffective except for one good chance in front which was
missed by Rob Petrie. Yale came out showing their speed but missed a nice
set up after which Petrie missed another close in chance.

At 5:27 Paul Lawson crossed checked and was caught. Yale buzzed on the
power play and UBC was lucky not to get called for a second penalty. UBC
was playing the Petrie line every other shift and on penalty kills. The
strategy was clearly to score first.

At 13:40 UBC's Andrew Kemper was called for hooking. UBC did a better job
killing this one. Yale had it in the zone but did not get an effective
shot off. At 16:14 Yale's Jason Noe served a holding the stick call. The
best chance on this power play was Yale's Cory Shea putting it on net on a
2x1.

Shots in the period were Yale 14 UBC 4. I won't be reporting on shots the
rest of the way since they were not announced but Yale dominated the
entire game.

Yale came out for the second period flying and UBC was just hanging on
when Chris Rowland was whistled for hooking at 1:41. The power play
looked nice but lacked a finish.

Yale finally broke the ice at 7:29. After UBC's best chance by Tyler
Kuntz was easily saved Jason Noe wristed one in with assists to Mark
Sproule and Adam Sauve. At nine minutes the theme continued with Ben
Stafford missing a sitter off the post.

At 9:29 UBC scored against the run of play on a shot close in to the
goalie's right. I didn't catch the scorer on the garbled PA but the
assists went to Rob Petrie and Josh Cinnamon. The tie did not last long
as at 10:15 Paul Lawson had too easy a time opening up the UBC defence
(assist to Joe Dart).

Yale, for all intents and purposes, sealed the game shortly afterwards at
11:19 when UBC's goaltender put in the puck off his own stick.

More of the same in the third period with Yale getting one more at 11:16
from Adam Sauve from Mark Sproule and Keith Fitzpatrick. At 16:04 UBC's
Glen Cominetti missed a penalty shot which summarizes this game.

Yale will face a sterner test tonight when they face the University of
Alberta Golden Bears.

Yale will also play UBC again Wednesday night in Burnaby.
