Thing is, they always swap two pairs of teams between East and
West (assuming there are six of each). Having two Eastern teams in
the West regional and vice-versa may not optimize attendence, but it
leads to a greater variety of matchups. Recent decisions by the
committee seem to choose the teams to be swapped with as much
consideration to attendence as rankings. (So for example they might
send Clarkson instead of Cornell out West in the above scenario.)

Well, of course Empire chose those games long ago. Based on
last season, UVM-SLU must have looked like a good matchups. At least
we get UVM-RPI in a couple of weeks and Cornell-Clarkson at the end of
the month. It's a bit early to worry about who gets the #2 seed in
the East, and with two points separating the top five teams in the
ECAC, I'm much more interested in the implications of games among
those teams for the ECAC race. If the season ended today, UVM
wouldn't even get a home playoff berth in the ECACs.
