I picked up a copy of the Globe at lunch and was stunned at what I
read.  Mike Madden's front page (that's page 1 - not just the sports
section) article continues onto page 52, where it takes up the entire
page - so you can understand why those of us who are kind of busy
can't post it today.  But here are a few things in the article that
might be of interest.
 
Madden includes interviews with various current and former BC players,
prep school coaches, alumni, etc. who all detail a mess of a situation
at BC.  Among the things Madden writes about:
 
* BC AD Chet Gladchuk said that BC has NO hockey scholarships to offer
this coming season - and another unnamed source said they probably
also will have none for the class that will enroll in September 1995.
 
* BC goalie Greg Taylor is quoted as saying that Milbury asked him to
give up his scholarship to help out with the situation.  (He did not.)
 
* Avon Old Farms hockey coach/AD John Gardner details extensively the
situation with Mike Correia, the goalie who was mentioned on HOCKEY-L
before.  Correia said he was originally promised a full athletic
scholarship, worth $25,000 a year, but later that was changed to $6,000
in need-based aid reached through the financial aid department.
Gardner said he advised Correia's father to sue BC.
 
* Gardner, coach of the prep school that sent BC players such as Brian
Leetch, said he would tell everyone he knew about what happened with
BC and Correia...he said he had "had it with BC."
 
* Several parents not quoted directly indicated plans to sue BC,
according to the article.  Apparently a number of players fell into
the same situation as Correia - offered a scholarship that was not
there, and then told to go through financial aid where they received
offers that were need-based and much less than the $25,000 a year that
an athletic scholarship is worth.
 
* Another BC player's father, who wished to remain anonymous,
explained how his son had been promised a scholarship by Cedorchuk but
then he kept receiving bills.  The father contacted the coach and was
told to just rip the bills up.  In the end the father had to pay the
full $25,000.
 
* Bob Hall, father of former BC and current UNH D Todd Hall, told how
his son was told a week or two before his junior year that he was not
playing hockey anymore.  Todd transferred to UNH, sat out last season
and will play this year; I consider him one of the better Ds in the
league and he will help UNH immensely.  His father said that he had
kept quiet till now, but that he plans to pursue this and BC hasn't
heard the end of it.
 
So...
 
It certainly looks like Jerry York has his hands full in getting
through this unbelievable mess.  I wish him the best of luck.
 
I suggest that anyone who can, pick up the Globe and read the article.
