Most hockey fans will not realize how much this win over CC means to
MTU. Finally showing some outstanding late season play, the last place
Huskies capture their first road win of the season against the
first place CC Tigers. Our best games of the season have come against
cats (Wildcats, Tigers, etc.). Despite the MTU team's improved play,
credit this win to Jamie Ram.

Comments:

CC got its 2 penalaties early in the game (1:11 and 2:18) to
allow MTU to have a 5 on 3 advantage. However MTU could not
capitalize on this early CC problem. With the exception of it
powerplay killing (about a third of the game), MTU dominated
CC. In the first, Pat Mikesch put a wrist shot past Bach from the
the top of the left circle. Then Reid, on a powerplay unit took
a shot and scored from the blue line to tie the game at 1.

In the second period, Jensen put a shot on net from the red (yes,
the red,) line which for some unexpected reason gave Bach problems.
Then, two and half minutes later Brent Peterson brought the puck
down close to crease and using the CC defenders as a screen, shot
the puck past Brian Bach. THe last score of the game was a top
shelf shot off of a rebound by Jaraczewski to make the game 3-2.
During the second period, CC had two controversial calls on scores
that went against them. THe first came just 15 seconds before Jensen's
red line shot. In this case the red light did go on, however, the
ref waved the shot off. Apparently, the puck did not completely
cross the goal line. The second came midway through the period.
In this case, the red light did not go on and the alleged score
occurred after the net had been dislodged.

The third period was generally uneventful but still characterized
by good hockey play. Randy Stevens of MTU was robbed of a shot that
went off of the cross bar. CC pulled its goalie with 57 seconds left
but with no success.

Jamie Ram is the most outstanding feature of Husky play. MTU continued
to use a clutching strategy to slow down the generally
faster CC players. As a result MTU took numerous penalties for
hooking, holding and interference. According to Dave Fisher (not the
most unbiased observer one could hope for,) the referees (Waisanen and
Schmitt) did an outstanding job last night. THe MTU penalties were
deserved. MTU has been doing some outstanding powerplay killing;
however, without the Hobey Baker award quality play of Jamie Ram at
the net, MTU's penalties would tell a different story. MTU's only
problem is scoring enough goals (usually, 3, ) to support Ram's fine
net work.

Tonight, we give it another go. Our season is now at least two games
long. We will take them one game at a time.
