Deron Treadwell <[log in to unmask]> writes about awarding of the Hockey
East regular season trophy:
>Why does the league not make a big deal out of this (until now)?? I don't
>know. Maybe it is to preserve the excitement of the postseason tournament.
>Do other conferences have regular season trophies?

In the WCHA, the MacNaughton Cup (which is hands-down the most
physically impressive trophy in college hockey) is awareded to the
regular seasaon champion. The WCHA awards the Broadmoor Trophy
to the tournament champ, but it's not nearly as impressive.

Quoting from the writeup about the MacNaughton Cup from the WCHA
yearbook, which is available on U.S. College Hockey Online at
http://www.uscollegehockey.com/m/19981999/macnaughton.html

"The striking MacNaughton Cup, a magnificent 77-year-old trophy, is
symbolic of the toughest college hockey league from top to bottom in
the world--the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. It is the much
ought-after prize that, each year, awaits the winner of the WCHA regular
season championship. It is a trophy that equates with consistency,
team work, and outstanding play throughout the course of the season.

"The MacNaughton Cup, which stands nearly three-feet high and
weighs some 40 pounds, is hand crafted of pure silver."
