Union lost both games of a 2-game series at Minnesota-Duluth this
week. Box scores and comments on both games follow. I only heard
about half of each game on the radio, so a lot of this is based only
on what I read in the papers.

Minnesota-Duluth came back from down 2-0 after the first period to
dominate Union, 6-3. The story of this one is in the shots on goal,
where the Bulldogs held a 51-19 advantage over the Dutchmen, and 35-8
over the final 2 periods. It was the strong goaltending of senior
Luigi Villa that kept Union in this one as long as they were.

Minnesota-Duluth completed the sweep Thursday night, again coming back
from down 2-0. This time it was the goaltending of freshmen Trevor
Koenig that kept the Dutchmen in a game in which they were outshot
37-28. UMD goalie Niklas Axelsson picked up the win in his first
career start. It was a controversial goal by Brad Federenko in the
final seconds of the second period that gave the win to the Bulldogs.
Union captain Cory Holbrough and Coach Bruce Delventhal both felt that
Federenko was off side on the play, but neither wanted to use it as an
excuse for losing the game.

Union played the game without sophomore Chris Ford, who went down with
an apparent pulled muscle in the abdomen. Ford's status is
day-to-day. These games were the first Western trip for the Dutchmen
since moving up to Division I in 1991. The Dutchmen have to be
disappointed to come up 0-2 on the trip, but it couldn't hurt to see a
different team and to sharpen their game before they hit the main part
of the ECAC schedule in January.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-11-2 with the sweep, while the Dutchmen
fall to 4-6-2, including 0-5-1 over the last 5 games since a win over
Division III Elmira. Union returns to ECAC play next weekend with
home games against Colgate and Cornell.
