Tom Clark, in his biography of Olson, points out that Rainer Gerhardt
was "editor of the avant-garde magazine Fragmente. Before his death by
suicide at age twenty-eight in 1954, Gerhardt would become the first
serious European translator of Olson's poetry, and ... [subject of] two
major Olson poems, 'To Gerhardt, There, Among Europe's Things' and the
elegy 'The Death of Europe.'"
