The State News today reported that 6 MSU recruits have signed letters of intent
to play here starting next year. Included are the top two college prospects as
rated by Michigan Hockey magazine: Center Richard Keyes (#1 prospect) from the
Kalamazoo Jr K-Wings (97 points on 54 goals & 43 assists last year), and
goaltender Chad Alban (#2), also from the Jr. K-Wings (20-2-3, 3.22 GAA last
year). Others include winger Mike Watt, from the Stratford Cullitons, and a
native of Coach Ron Mason's hometown (Seaforth, Ont). According to the
article, many expected Watt to enter the NHL draft after his time with the
Cullitons. Defenseman Kevin Harper, currently with the Wexford Raiders also
signed, joining several other former Raiders (Anson Carter, Steve Guolla,
Michael Burkett, Steve Norton, Mike Ware, and his borther Kelly). Another
defenseman, John Gaskins from the Dubuque (Iowa) Fighting Saints will also
joint the team, giving the Spartans several young players behind the blue line
next year. Finally, Sean Berens, also from Dubuque, will fill in at center or
wing, and is coming off a 97 point season last year, and has experience on the
under 16 and under 17 teams internationally the last 2 summers. Looks to be
some more great talent in Green and White next year!
