Providence College put the offense in gear tonight skating to a 9-5 win
over Boston College before 1854 fans at Schneider Arena. This was the second
Hockey East win of the season for the Friars who are now 2-6-0 in league play
and 4-7-1 overall. Boston College drops to 1-3-1 in Hockey East, 4-4-1 overall.
The Friars got on the board just 14 seconds into the game. Joe Hulbig
skated in front of the BC net and tapped goaltender Greg Taylor on the stick.
Taylor reacted to what he thought was a shot. Meanwhile, Ian Paskowski fired
the puck in from the point. The shot deflected off Hulbig's skate and in
behind a totally confused Taylor. To say the least, Taylor was a bit upset by
the play expecting either an interference call on Hulbig or having the goal
disallowed for being kicked in. Neither occurred and the score stood 1-0 Friars.
Freshman Russ Guzior made it 2-0 at 3:34 off a 2 on 1 break with Green.
Green drew the defenseman to his side and fired a nice pass right on Guzior's
stick. Guzior skated in a lone, gave a head fake and put the backhand by
Taylor to the stick side. The goal was Guzior's 5th of the season as he
continues to lead the Friars in goals scored.
George Breen put the Friars up by 3 in the closing minutes of the period.
Chad Quenneville muscled the puck over the blue line and broke in 2 on 1 with
Breen. Quenneville centered the puck into the crease and Breen forced the
shot home. Taylor had his stick on the puck but Breen, 6-2 201 pounds muscled
both Taylor's stick and the puck into the net.
Providence came out sluggish in the second period as Boston College really
forced the action. The Eagles came out hitting and forced the Friars back on
their heels. Brian Callahan put the Eagles on the board at 1:19 of the second
on one of the oddest shots I've seen. It appeared Callahan was just clearing
it in when the puck deflected off several players about 10 feet in front of the
net. The puck turned into a lazy pop fly that sailed over a surprised Dan
Dennis and into the Friar goal.
Brian Callahan brought the Eagles to within one at the 4:36 mark with the
Friars' Peterson in for tripping. John Joyce fired a shot from point blank
but Dennis made the save. The puck skipped to Dennis' left, Dennis slid to
his right and Callahan fired it into the open net for the power play goal.
The Friars' freshmen line silenced BC's comeback just a minute later. Russ
Guzior stole the puck at the blue line and skated in 2 on 1 with Green. Guzior
fired a pass behind the BC defense and Green slapped it home for his first of
two tonight.
George Breen ended the second period scoring a minute later off a nice feed
from Brady Kramer. Breen skated across the middle and received the pass from
Kramer in the corner. Breen turned and fired a low shot behind Taylor. At that
point, Steve Cedorchuk had seen enough and called on Josh Singewald to mind the
nets. Taylor left the game after 27 minutes making 10 saves and relinquishing
5 goals. The second period ended with the Friars up 5-2.
Providence went on a scoring binge in the third starting with Dennis Burke's
shot from the point through a screen. Singewald never saw the puck as Burke
picked up his third goal of the season.
Brian Ridolfi added to the scoring at 6:05. He tipped the puck at the red
line and streaked in on a footrace with David Hymovitz. Hymovitz got the stick
in front and tripped Ridolfi as he got the shot off. The puck scooted over
Singewald's stick as all three went in the net.
David Green picked up his second goal of the night (and his career) at the
7:05 mark. Guzior and Green came in 2 on 1. Guzior faked a slapshot, drawing
both the defensman and Singewald to the side. He responded with a beautiful
pass that Green one-timed into the open net.
Freshman Hal Gill closed out the Friar scoring 22 seconds later on a
blistering slapshot from the point. Lamoriello (the son of New Jersey Devils
General Manager Lou Lamoriello) fed Gill at the point and Gill picked up the
first goal of his career.
Brian Callahan picked up the hat trick and ended the Friar scoring streak
at 8:27. Joyce and Callahan combined for a strong drive at the Friar net.
Dennis attempted to cover the pass but Callahan caught him in a split and shot
it through the 5 hole. It was Callahan's second power play goal of the night.
Hymovitz picked up his 8th of the season with the Eagles on a 5 on 3
advantage. A shot by Don Chase went wide to the left but the puck bounced off
some pretty lively boards and wound up in front and to the right of the net.
Hymovitz capitalized and slapped it home at 13:56.
LaFerriere ended the scoring at 15:39, firing a knuckleball from the top of
the left faceoff circle that caught Dennis flat-footed. Dennis couldn't decide
how to play the puck and wound up picking it out of the net.
Tonight's game marked a very solid effort for the Friars although play got
very sloppy late in the third period. The game also got rather chippy as
referees John Gravallese and Steve McBride handed out 10 third period penalties,
5 of them for high sticking. Boston College appeared weak on defense and
especially weak in the net. Neither Taylor nor Singewald appeared to handle
the play which is quite a change from the strong goaltending the Eagles have
shown in the past. Humovitz, Buckley, and Callahan can all clearly put the
puck in the net but the inexperience of the Eagles' defense (with 4 Freshmen,
one Sophomore, and one Senior) definitely took its toll.
