Certainly the sport has grown as of late but IMO the main reason the local
media has paid more attention to college hockey recently can be summed up in
two words:  Boston College.  BC has always garnerned lots of media attention
regardless of the endeavor, something that often irks fans of other local
colleges (at least ones that I know).   Not sure why the media loves BC so
much (I often heard that it's because the local media is filled with BC
alums) but my guess is that if BC had had a down year similar to that of the
early 90's, the coverage would not be the same.   Even if BU was in the
Final Four.  I remember the David Emma years in which BC had a lot of
success, coverage was also high.
 
I'm convinced that if the BC tiddleewink (sp?) team was competing for the
national title, there would be some coverage....
