According to the College Hockey Guide, 1998 version (it's the only one I have)
the WCHA breakdown is:

With a 22 player roster, not including goalies, the number of Canadian
(Canadians who played in Canadian leagues) players is:

North Dakota- 9
Minnesota Duluth-10
Denver- 10
Colorado College-8
Alaska Anchorage 10
Michigan Tech- 14

Wisc and Saint Cloud have few Canadians and MN of course none.
The schools that border Canada do more recruiting there, at least according to
the numbers represented in the guide for last season.
The other part of the roster is USHL owned. Few players are right out of high
school.

College recruiters today usually aren't going to give scholarship bucks to
developing someone. They're going for players who can pitch in right away and
be highly competitive. Years ago when there was no USHL, players were Canadian
or right out of high school or Eastern prep. USHL growth has diluted high
school hockey.

So, the trend is toward taking over-agers whether they've been on USHL teams
or Canadian junior teams at least according to the printed statistical
information in the College Hockey Guide of 1998. The mix of USHL and Canadians
seems fairly even! It will be interesting to see how those numbers change
through the years. High schoolers, unless super talents, will face Jrs.
automatically, as is the case today!

A sport's neurologist here in the Twin Cities and co-author of many articles
on concussions said that Randy Dick of the NCAA has shown many old films
illustrating how the college game used to be played. It's changed! So has
recruiting.
