This game was hard on my fingers, which probably spent half or more of the
game typing with all those penalties. I made the comment to Charlie Shub
while saving the box score to a disk for him that this one should make
those who think all the penalties should be included in a box happy. :)

No records set with 45 penalties for the game (8 short of the top 5 in the
WCHA yearbook for most penalties in a game by 2 teams), but it's still
going to add quite a few to both team records, with Denver getting 25 and
CC getting 20. 30 of them were for roughing.

The Tigers didn't waste any time in the first period, as Darren Clark
scored on goaltender Ben Heinrich only 51 seconds in. Unfortunately,
Anders Bjork, who we were surprised to see play after he had been out so
much, returned the scoring on Colin Zulianello 42 seconds later. It
appeared at first that this might be a close game, tied at 1-1 only a
minute and a half in. Denver got two early penalties, and the Tiger power
play connected on the second one, with Brian Swanson putting in a rebound
from Calvin Elfring's shot from the blue line. T.J. Tanberg got a goal 21
seconds later, which at first was said to be unassisted, but later after
review two assists were added. Then came the brawl at 10:07. I didn't see
how it started, but the SID had said Paul Johnson was in the beginning of
it, yet he didn't end up with anything. Basically almost everyone on the
ice but the goalies were duking it out, and I was surprised only a bunch
of double roughings were given out rather than something more serious. 17
2-minute penalties in all, with all of them being coincidental double
roughings except for an extra cross checking call on K.J. Voorhees, giving
the Pioneers the power play. The extra penalty was served by Jason
Gudmundson. I saw bits and pieces of the second half of this period, but
most of it was spent literally typing up all of those penalties. CC got
two more power plays, and I happened to be watching the action for a few
seconds in time to catch Brian Swanson score his second power play goal
during the second one. One more penalty for each team before the period
ended, giving a total of 23 penalties already.

The second period only had 5 penalties, so I got to see all of that one.
:) Tanberg continued the rout of the Pioneers 7 minutes in to make it 5-1
CC. The Tigers got a power play at 10:23, but it was negated 35 seconds
later with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty given to Stewart Bodtker,
making it 4-on-4. Maybe the Tigers should play that way more often,
because another 2 goals 21 seconds apart happened again, as Toby Petersen
got one and Brent Voorhees, K.J.'s little brother, got his first
collegiate career goal. The period ended 7-1 in favor of CC.

Tempers started flaring again in the third period with 2 sets of
coincidentals in the first 5 minutes. Then the Tigers went on their ninth
power play of the game, and Aaron Karpan put in CC's third power play goal
about a minute later. The middle of the period and the north end of the
arena must be a bad combination, because another scuffle broke out in the
same area as the first period, this time over James Patterson trying to
run over Zulianello. Only 4 sets of double roughings and a checking
the goaltender were handed out this time, but it was still enough to keep
my fingers busy for awhile. Karpan got his second goal of the game 30
seconds later, and Jason Gudmundson's assist gave him 100 career points.
Both goalies were changed after this, CC to Todd Gustin and DU to Anders
Eisner (who had never played in a game yet), as well as Denver taking a
time out. Not much happened after that, with only one more set of
coincidentals being called and shots only being 3-2 in Denver's favor
after the goaltending change.

Amazingly enough, the WCHA officals didn't find any typos or other things
wrong in the box score when they checked it, considering how much I had to
type up. :) For the game, CC outshot DU 42-19 and were 4 of 10 on the
power play, while DU was 0 for 5 on the power play.

Same two teams tomorrow night at the Denver Coliseum. Hopefully CC can
make it 6 wins in a row.
