Regarding the U's decsion to keep the stereo and TV off:

No surprise. It's clear the coaching staff feels the team isn't focused
during practices or games. Although I think music is a wonderful
motivational factor, TV certainly is not (except for game film, natch). I
mean, who needs a TV in the locker room anyway? Do you really want your
hormone-ravaged sophomore defenseman thinking about the Baywatch girls when
he's out on the ice?

Besides, sometimes a change is good, and silence is better. Not having
these external stimuli in the locker room will certainly be noticed at the
next game -- and will definitely cause a few players to think about where
their noggins should be.

And for the green stuff:

From a nutritional and athletic standpoint, Gatorade is about the worst
stuff you could put into your athletes, especially during a competition. It
is far too high in complex sugars to be easily absorbed by the system
during exercise (as compared to water or "simpler" sports drinks) and so
rich in flavoring as to cause easy irritation and cramping of the stomach
lining.

In short, it makes many athletes feel "weighed down" and "slower."

Ever notice you don't see the NFL guys drinking out of gatorade bottles
(the ultimate marketing ploy)? Half of them aren't drinking gatorade in
those green-and-orange cups, the other half are drinking a very watered
down version.

Gatorade is great for quenching thirst -- IE, *after* a game. For practices
and game time however, you can't get much better than good ol' water (or a
drink with very light flavoring and only simple sugars).

Sounds like a good coaching decision to me on both accounts.
