This is based on speculation, but this is not "returning to campus
sites". This is a bid, made (I assume) by Wisconsin and the Coliseum,
and accepted by the NCAA.
For the two years of "regionals", the West has had relatively poor
attendance in Detroit. Several of us have speculated that the regionals
being one week after the CCHA tournament has been a factor, and the
WCHA tournament would probably have the same effect in Milwaukee this
year, or St. Paul in years that they host it.
So, if all a host has to do is be able to hold the number of fans that
Detroit has been getting, several WCHA arenas (and presumably others as
well) could host it, and probably draw well. The coliseum holds 8,644
for hockey. Madison is closer to Minneapolis, Duluth, and St. Cloud
(and of course Madison) than Detroit, and probably the same for the UP
teams.
I'd call my friends at the Atheletic Department and ask, but I have a
network to break ... I mean fix :-)
