MAINE FALLS TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN 5-4
Black Bears finish as runner-up of Everblades Classic
ESTERO, Fla. - Northern Michigan scored at the 10:25 mark of the third
period to break a 4-4 tie and defeat the University of Maine in the
championship game of the Everblades College Hockey Classic. Northern
Michigan improves to 11-6-1 with the win while Maine falls to 9-6-3.
Tom Reimann (Blaine, Minn.) opened the scoring at 11:52 of the first period
with his seventh goal of the season on a shot from the blueline. Lucas
Lawson (Braeside, Ontario) found Reimann open and made a nice pass to pick
up the assist. Maine added a second goal at 17:42 when Colin Shields
(Glasgow, Scotland) scored his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Martin
Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) registered an assist on the goal.
Northern Michigan did not take long to answer as Mike Stutzel (Victoria,
British Columbia) cut the lead to 2-1 with his sixth goal of the season.
Maine took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
Northern Michigan was whistled for the first penalty of the game at the
10:43 of the second period when Dan Donette (Anoka, Minn.) was called for
obstruction-hooking. Maine followed with a power play goal by Robert Liscak
(Skalcia, Slovakia) exactly one minute later. Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville,
Mass.) and Lawson both added assists on the goal. Once again, the Wildcats
answered back as Dave Bonk (Brandon, Manitoba) scored an unassisted goal at
13:02. The Black Bears took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission and a
32-15 edge in shots.
Northern Michigan tied the contest at 3-3 just 34 second into the third
period when Alan Swanson (Marquette, Mich.) took a shot from just inside the
blueline and beat UMaine netminder Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta). The
Wildcats took their first lead of the night when Stutzel added his second of
the night. Yeats came out to make the initial save and Stutzel beat him with
the rebound. Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) tied the game at 4-4 at 3:13 when
he made a great individual effort and beat Wildcat netminder Craig Kowalski
(Clinton Township, Mich.). Gray Shaneberger (Sewell, N.J.) added an assist
on the goal. Bryce Cockburn (Campbell River, British Columbia) gave Northern
Michigan the lead for good at the 10:25 mark of the final frame.
Matt Yeats made 22 saves in net for the Black Bears and falls to 3-5-2 on
the season. Craig Kowalski made 37 saves for the Wildcats, including 17 in
the second period. Maine outshot Northern Michigan 41-27 in the game.
Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, Mass.) and Lawson were each named to the
all-tournament team. Metcalf played an outstanding two-way game as he
recorded two assists in the win over Ohio State and finished the tournament
plus two. Lawson scored a goal and added three assists in the two games.
The Black Bears return to action on Friday, January 4 when they host Hockey
East rival Providence at 7:00 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
