John, as some know I'm one of the most vocal on the list about being
opposed to rough play and fighting (Wayne, did you ever publish my
musings about this vis-a-vis Team USA and the France game?), so I'm
no defender of this kind of thing. You have the advantage of having
seen the Western final between UM & NMU while I only had the radio
broadcast, so I can't comment on what it looked like. All I can say
is that over the course of the season the Wildcats were NOT penalized
that much. Also, while they may have been concentrating on Felsen
(again, I wasn't there), they have at least one player who in every
game I watched faced that sort of thing--Scott Beattie. Scott was
literally (well, figuratively, anyway) undressed by his "shadows"
in most games. I have no doubt at all that it accounts for the
dive his goal-scoring took in the second half of the season (found
the touch in Detroit, but it takes team defense too, doesn't it?)
and also the greater number of retaliatory/frustration penalties
he ended up taking this year. In all honesty, the only player I have
seen *regularly* go out of his way to put a hard check on someone
(i.e. when the target doesn't have the puck) is Mark Hadden--who is
probably the smallest guy on the team. (Before the game started the
NMU announcers were commenting on how much taller and heavier the
Wolverines are than most of their Wildcat counterparts.)

Maybe things are called closer in the CCHA than they are in the WCHA.
