Well, fish ARE animals, but I've never seen one thrown at Clarkson...

IMHO, other than hats (it's tradition, and fairly harmless), throwing
things on the ice is, well, just lame.  There's no thought required, just
a good arm.  It's far more fun to think of something really witty to yell
at the players/refs/whatever (and preferably without profanity - heck,
any idiot can swear).  Of course, most players in NCAA Div. I are
disciplined enough to ignore such insults...can't really say the same
about the ACHA, though (at least not a few years ago at Penn State, when
opposing goalies would occassionally swing their sticks over the glass at
the fans).
 
Yeah, I know I'm going to get flamed for poor sportsmanship, but at least
yelling doesn't actually alter play on the ice, unless the players let
it....
