Several of us had noticed the proliferation of vertical slits in the backs
of the padded shorts worn by hockey players from UAF, as well as other
teams we played. At nearly $200 a pair for the shorts, the neat,
scissor-like slits looked intentional. We wondered why the players had done
this.

Theories ranged from "to combat restricted leg movement" to "It's an
attempt to keep other players from hooking the shorts with their stick
blades, thus impeding their progress."

Actual reason: They put on their skates before their pants! Duhhhhh.
