        Clarkson completed a clean sweep of CCHA foe Bowling Green (1-5-0)
with a 6-1 win.  Freshman Don Smith scored two goals in a span of just
over 8:00 in the first period to help the visiting Golden Knights (2-0-0)
to their second win of the season.  Buddy Wallace netted his second goal
in as many games and his fourth in as many games when counting the Golden
Knight's two exhibition games in the Ice Breaker Invitational, to give
Clarkson a 4-1 lead.  Freshman Willie Mitchell netted his second goal in
as many nights, Chris Clark scored once and Dana Mulvihill tallied a goal
to give Clarkson, which is receiving votes in the US College Hockey Online
national poll, six on the night.  Dan Murphy turned aside 21 shots on the
night.
 
        Rensselaer treated its home crowd of 3,390 to a 4-2 victory over
UMass-Lowell (1-1-0) in its home opener.  The Engineers(1-1-0 jumped out
to a 4-0 lead behind two goals from Doug Battaglia, one from Matt Garver
and one from Mark Murphy.  Scott Prekaski turned aside 25 shots on the
evening to give the Engineers their first win of the season and Head Coach
Dan Fridgen has 50th career win.
 
        Senior Paul DiFrancesco carried St. Lawrence to its first win of
the season, 8-6 over St. Thomas (1-4-0) in the consolation game of the JC
Penny Classic in Orono, Maine.  DiFrancesco tallied four goals and two
assists in the win.  The two teams were tied at six before DiFrancesco
completed the hat trick at the 16:18 mark of the third period to give the
Saints (1-1-0) a 7-6 led.  Then with St. Thomas on the power play
DiFrancesco netted a short-handed goal with 1:50 left in the game.  Bob
Prier tallied a pair of goals and a pair of assists and Sean Coakley
turned aside 28 shots in the victory.
 
        Dru Brugess netted the second ECAC hat trick on the evening when he
scored three times against Army including once at the 2:43 mark of
overtime to propel Colgate, ranked 10th in the nation in the USA
Today/American Hockey Magazine (2-1-0) to a 4-3 victory over the Cadets.
Dan Brenzavich remained perfect on the season turning aside 21 shots as
Colgate and Army went to overtime for the second straight season.
 
        Vermont outshot third-ranked Boston University 34-23 but fell to
the Terriers 3-2 in the Catamounts (0-2-0) home opener.  Boston University
(2-0-0) took a 2-0 lead before B.J. Kilbounre pulled the Catamounts to
within one at the 4:52 mark of the second period.  The Terriers regained a
two-goal lead at the 8:12 mark and Vermont scored its final goal at the
16:42 mark of the final stanza.
 
        Union opened its 1997-98 season with a 5-4 loss at Providence.
 
        In exhibition action two-time ECAC Tournament defending champion
Cornell defeated visiting Ryerson 4-0.
