#2 on his back, but #1 in our hearts, Bob Beers appears to have left
hockey. But not quite; read below.

Bob Beers, given a choice between continuing his playing career with the
Ottawa Senators or moving into the broadcast booth, has opted to join WBZ
Radio as analyst on Bruins broadcasts.

Beers, 30, spent last season on the Bruins' blue line, his second tour in
Boston after he broke in here in 1989-90 out of the University of Maine. The
6-foot-2-inch defenseman also played for Tampa Bay, Edmonton, and the
Islanders before rejoining the Bruins Aug. 5, 1996, as a free agent.

The Senators believed Beers would accept their offer of a two-way contract
for the upcoming season, but word around the FleetCenter yesterday was that
he reversed his decision and agreed to sign on with WBZ.

Beers will be Bob Neumeier's third color partner in as many seasons.
Ex-Bruin Barry Pederson handled the 1995-96 season, the club's first in the
FleetCenter, but opted not to return for a second year in order to
concentrate on his career as an investment adviser. Another ex-Bruin, Andy
Brickley, recently bolted for the bright lights at Channel 38, filling the
color job vacated by the departure of Derek Sanderson.

Beers, who lives in Lexington, did not return a phone message left at his
home last night. Nate Greenberg, the Bruins' longtime assistant to club
president/general manager Harry Sinden, confirmed that Beers had been hired
by WBZ.
