Average ranking of each league(#teams):

               This week Last week
  WCHA(09): 25.00 25.78
   HEA(09): 20.33 20.67
  CCHA(11): 24.18 24.18
  ECAC(12): 24.42 24.25
  MAAC(06): 37.67 37.83
   IND(04): 33.25 31.00

This week ...

   - Double losses by VT and StLaw enable Quinnipiac to climb to 10th
place. Normally a single victory over a 50th place club would not
allow an advancement, but Quinnipiac's victory was over the now 5-5
Iona. To HEAL, this was a victory over a .500 club, not a victory
over a next to last place club.

   - After a brief dip, Michigan returns to the top 4.

   - Week's biggest gainer was Yale, jumping from 43rd to 35th place.
(Denver and Dartmouth both gained 7 places).

   - Week's biggest loser was shared by Clarkson, Mankato and Harvard
     (losing 5 places each).

   - Note that BC and Notre Dame both have 12-6-2 records (65% winning
percentage), yet BC is ranked 3rd and Notre Dame 11th. With HEAL,
it's not who you play, it's who you beat, on average.

On this ranking ...

This ranking uses games played by NCAA Division I teams eligible for
consideration to the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championships.
Specifically excluded this season are the University of Nebraska-Omaha,
as they are in their last year as an "emerging" NCAA Division I program,
and the two Division II teams from the MAAC (Sacred Heart and American
International).

On "The Heal Point System" ...

The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.

On the Maine secondary school calculation ...

"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.

"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.

Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
   results.

Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and US
College Hockey Online, sometimes supplemented by other sources. Mr.
Machnik's composite of all Division I men's ice hockey games is
available at http://www.uscollegehockey.com/ in the section marked
schedules and then Division I composite schedule.
