There's an interesting article in the Minnesota Daily (an opinion piece) on
the penalties that were dealt to Wisconsin following the championship game.
The article that was written by Jess Myers, who is the Gopher Hockey student
writer, was titled: "NC$$ action on Wisconsin is not answer". I will quote
parts of the article below, but not all of it as most of the article describes
the penalties that have been levied on Wisconsin and have already been posted
to this list.
<quoted material starts here> In a rare effort to pay attention to a sport it
often ignores, the NC$$ has recently decided to discipline the University of
Wisconsin's hockey program.
As a result of actions taken near the end of the NC$$ title game on April 4,
the NC$$ has issued a rash of suspensions and fines against members of the
Badgers.
It's not that the actions of the Badgers were appropriate or that the
university's disciplinary actions weren't. <the self-imposed discipline on
the team/coaches> But one can't help but feel that college hockey in general
is getting mistreated when the only time the NC$$ pays attention to it is to
issue punishment.
Media covering the NC$$ hockey regionals this season got to see just how
ignored hockey is by the NC$$. By scheduling the NC$$ hockey finals at the
same time as the basketball Final Four, they virtually assured that hockey
would be ignored in favor of the publicity giant that the Final Four has
become.
Maybe if the NC$$ got involved in more than 11 games a year, its opinion on --
and discipline of -- college hockey would count as something more than a
nuisance.
<end quoted material>
I wonder what it would take to separate the Final Four from the Phinal Phour?
It was especially bad for Michigan fans who MAY have felt pulled in two
different directions. It's my opinion that MOST hockey fans are not BIG basket-
ball fans and vice versa, although there are those few that do support both
equally when they can.
One other interesting note from the article stated that Derksen and Joe Harwell
were not disciplined because their eligibility has expired.
Carol (aka "Avis" - trying harder to keep the mail coming in! ;-) :-))
