Regarding Title IX:

Two years ago the University of Illinois dropped two men's sports,
swimming and fencing. At the time the athletic department said the cuts
were made for financial reasons, not because of Title IX. (If you
think about it, swimming and fencing are probably two of the cheapest
sports - both require little equipment and relatively small teams.) Five or
six of the former swimmers nonetheless sued our school for
discrimination, but eventually lost in the courts.
Just last month the athletic department announced it is adding a
women's softball team. Apparently they saved enough on Speedos and
swords (or whatever they call them in fencing) to start a new sport from
the ground up.
Actually, I have no problem with Title IX - I think it's great. But
I don't think its original intent was to cut men's teams in order to add
women's teams. Unfortunately, this is what is happening on many college
campuses.
