With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournaments contests. For Contest #2, in which all rounds are
scored the same, the overall winner is...
Robin Lock
whose total of 72 points was two better than runners-up Wayne Smith and CHODR.
As for the individual conference winners...
Todd Nielson finished atop the ECAC with 20 points.
The Hockey East race featured a six-way tie for the top spot among myself,
Robin Lock, Troy D. Mills, CHODR, Wayne Smith, and Mark Lewin, each with 10
points. Robin and I remained tied after the first tiebreaker, as we each
forecast the correct championship-game score, but the second tiebreaker
went to me.
There was a three-way tie in the CCHA among Robin Lock, Charlie Shub, and
William Sangrey, with 14 points each. Robin and Charlie remained tied
after the first tiebreaker, but Robin took the second and the top spot.
The WCHA race wasn't an easy one either, as there were eight tied with 14
points: Robin Lock, Mike Larson, Nathan Hampton, Will Groskreutz, Wayne
Smith, CHODR, Scott Kaplan, and Mark Lewin. The first tiebreaker cut it
down to Robin, Mike, Nathan, and Will, with Robin winning the second
tiebreaker.
Wayne Smith took the honors in Atlantic Hockey with 22 points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 3-1) to be 5-1,
you would get two points; if you picked 1-0, you would get three points;
and if you picked 5-4, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For Hockey East, the championship game score was 4-1 and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 74.
For the CCHA, the championship game score was 3-2 and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 113.
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 4-0 and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 95.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below (note that no USCHO
picks were made for the ECAC consolation or the WCHA championship game), as
are the "Higher Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher
seed for each game had been picked to win.
