Holyoke's point was that the UMaine faculty, when they realize that corporate
sponsorships bring in $350,000+/-, will realize that the extra revenue helps
the university mission as a whole and allows the university to spend more
money on their various disciplines instead of spending it on athletics.
Unfortunately, this isn't true, on several levels.
 
1. The income from corporate sponsorships doesn't displace money that they
university would spend on athletics; if the athletic department didn't get
the sponsorship income, it would have to cut its budget.
 
2. Even if the corporate sponsorship funds were to flow indirectly to
academic departments, I see no reason to believe that the more vocal UMaine
professors would be grateful. They'd just figure that the money should have
been theirs, anyway.
