Bertagna to run Hockey East

By Bob Monahan, 02/25/97

Joe Bertagna, a graduate of Arlington High School
(1969) and Harvard University (1973), and a highly
regarded goalie coach, will be named Hockey East
commissioner this afternoon at a press conference at
Boston University.

He replaces Merrimack College athletic director Bob
DeGregorio, who stepped down after the 1995-96
season.

Bertagna, now a resident of Gloucester, has been
affiliated with the ECAC in numerous roles since 1984,
including two years as commissioner.

A goalie under legendary coaches Eddie Burns at
Arlington High and Cooney Weiland at Harvard,
Bertagna brings a good deal of experience to the Hockey
East table. He is knowledgeable about communications,
marketing, and the college hockey world in general.

A former goalie coach for the Boston Bruins and
assistant coach of the 1994 US Olympic team, Bertagna
also is executive director of the American Hockey
Coaches Association.
