Whitehead hired at UMass-Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. - Tim Whitehead, who has been an assistant coach at
UMass-Lowell for the last five years, was named the River Hawks coach on
July 22. He takes over for Bruce Crowder who left to take the Northeastern
coaching job. Whitehead helped the River Hawks to two NCAA tournament
appearances in his five years as an assistant.

Whitehead was also an assistant coach at the University of Maine during
the 1990-91 season, when they reached the NCAA national semifinals. He was
also an assistant coach at Middlebury College for two seasons, serving as
the junior varsity coach and helping them reach the ECAC Division II East
championship game in 1989-90. "Tim is a terrific individual who represents
everything positive about UMass-Lowell hockey," said River Hawk athletic
director Dana
Skinner. "His dedication to developing successful student-athletes both
on and off the ice, coupled with his own willingness to help others, will
make him an outstanding educator." Terms of Whitehead's contract were not
disclosed, but Skinner indicated that he received a multi-year deal.

UMass-Lowell opens its first campaign under Whitehead Friday, Oct. 25, as
the River Hawks kick off the final season of play at the Tully Forum
against UMass-Amherst.
