While I'm sure someone from Ann Arbor will give a more detailed
history of that school, it is my understanding that Michigan, founded in
1817, was intended as a liberal arts institution to educate the citizens
of what was then Michigan Territory. Michigan State, founded in 1855,
was the first institution established under the Morrill Act, and was
originally known as "Michigan Agricultural College". Michigan is *not* a
land grant institution.

Michigan State became know as "Michigan State College" until (I
believe) the late 1950s or early 1960s, at which time it became Michigan
State University, a change which I am told was vigorously opposed by the
University of Michigan.

The two schools are totally separate (State has trustees,
Michigan has regents), had markedly different academic calendars for
years, and butt heads at pretty much every turn in all matters. Michigan
State formerly had branch campuses, most notably Michigan State
University - Oakland (now Oakland University), but has none now.
Michigan operates branch campuses, known as University of Michigan -
Flint and University of Michigan - Dearborn, from which I am told, in the
true spirit of institutional loyalty, you cannot transfer upper level
credits to the Ann Arbor campus.
