There was a discussion about GLI scheduling on the MTU alumni
discussion list back in January (which included someone "in the
know"... not named to protect the innocent :-). For the last
several years, the ADs from MTU and U of Michigan (the tournament
"co-hosts) have had a "gentleman's agreement" with Olympia Arenas
(the people who run Joe Louis Arena) and the Red Wings organization
to make the schedule always allowing for a Michigan-Michigan State
final. It seems that the arena people ARE concerned about losing
2nd night advance ticket sales (and the resulting revenues, such
as concessions) if Michigan and Michigan State play in the 1st
round... and the thought is less people would come to see them
first night.

This did NOT go over well with the Tech alumni (to put it mildly).

To be fair, the Wings organization does do a fair amount of
promotion for the tournament (and other college hockey events
at Joe Louis, such as the CCHA tournament), and they have a
long history of supporting the GLI.

One would think that having LSSU coming might change that
perception, but I'm not going to hold my breath. (I don't
remember the last time that UofM played MSU in the first
round, but it's been a LONG time.)
