1995 Outlook:

Undoubtedly, defense will be the strentgh of this years squad. Although the
Engineers lost Second Team All-ECAC selection Adam Bartell to graduation,
Rensselaer returns six players behind the blue line. Anchoring the defensive
corps is senior captain Patrick Rochon. A leader both on and off the ice,
Rochon finished the 1994-95 season first among defensemen in points with 26
(4-22-26), while his 22 assist effort was good for third on the team overall.

Helping Rochon patrol the Engineers' zone are seniors Chris Kiley and Jon
Pirrong. Kiley, who also saw shifts on offense last season, will likely
be used on the power play and the penalty kill units. Pirrong tallied three
goals and 10 assists last year, but his real numbers came in the penalty box,
as he was tagged with 28 penalties for 75 minutes.

The Engineers have three solid defensemen in sophomores Patrick Brownlee, who
appeared in all but one game last season, notching a goal and six assists,
Bryan Tapper, who knocked in four goals and added three assists, and Chris
Aldous who chipped in one assist. Adding to the veteran six are newcomers
George Murray, an accomplished Junior A player who should blend in quite well
with the Rensselaer defense, and Cory Bilodeau, the EJHL's Outstanding Defen-
seman last seson.

rensselaer should also be quite effective in goal. Returning for his final
season in net for the Engineers is senior Mike Tamburro. Tamburro is a large
part of the reason Rensselaer rose through the ranks to capture the ECAC
Championship, as his superior play between the pipes garnered him ECAC
Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. The ECAC Player of the Week three
consecutive times over the final weeks of last season, he posted a 2.92 GAA
and .914 save percentage on the season.

The Engineers have a gem of a backup in sophomore Bryan Masotta, a talented
goaltender who should see plenty of time in net this season. And with the
addition of freshman Anthony Perglotti, Rensselaer may be sporting one of the
best goaltending units in the league.

The forward ranks face several key losses, as graduation speeled an end to the
careers of seven forwards, including Craig Hamelin (15-29-44), who holds the
sixth spot among Rensselaer's all-time assist leaders, Kelly Askew (8-16-24),
who along with Hamelin has signed to play in Sweden, and Toronto Maple Leafs
draft pick Wayne Clarke (15-13-28). (ed. who was subsequently released by
Toronto earlier in training camp)

However, the Engineers still hold onto last season's leading scorer, senior
Bryan Richardson, who drove home 23 goals and racked up another 24 assists. A
playmaker and oneof tRensselaer's most skilled forwards, Richardson is expected
to once again center the Engineers' top line.

One other certainty up front is senior Tim Regan. Regan, who finished third
on the scoring charts with 31 points on 12 goals and 19 assists, fills the
right wing slot on Richardson's line. Senior Jeff O'Connor (11-14-25) is one
possibility to snag the left wing slot, as he ably completed the line with
Richardson and Regan last season, after being sidelined with a knee injury
earlier in the season.

Looking to improve on an impresive rookie campaign is sophomore Eric Healey,
who as a freshman last season, scored 13 goals and 11 assists en route to
ECAC All-Rookie Team honors. Classmate Doug Battaglia, likewise, is coming
off a strong inaugural season with the Engineers, in which he collected
a goal and four assists. Rensselaer also benefits from the experience of
senior Chris Maye (1-6-7) and Michigan Tech transfer Kyle Ferguson, who is
eligible to join the team second semester.

But there aren't likely to be any long term gaps among the forward lines with
the freshmen class Fridgen has coming in. Among Rensselaer's newest members
of the offense are several sharpshooters, including Mark Murphy, and eighth
round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs who led the Midwestern Junior B
League in scoring with 108 points in 47 games; Alain St. Hilaire, who topped
the scoring charts for the Weyburn Red Wings (Junior A) with 101 points;
Daniel Riva, who tallied a team-leading 80 points in 50 games for the Rhode
Island Junior Sharks (EJHL); Jean-Francois Gosselin, a 54 goal scorer for the
Joliette Nationals (Junior A)l and Matt Garver, Northwood Prep's record-holder
for most points in a season. Also providing added depth in the front lines
are freshmen Erick James and Stephen Fukes.
