The YAM2 Ranking is based on a simple mathematical formula which is
designed to measure team accomplishment over the course of the season. It
uses Win% and a strength of schedule (SOS) metric, in similar fashion to
the Rating Percentage Index (RPI). However, YAM2 differs from the RPI in
one significant aspect. In order to prevent inverse effects, the ranking
metric is a product of Win% and the SOS metric, whereas in the RPI metric
it is a sum. Thus, a loss by a team will almost always produce a decrease
in the YAM2 metric, and a win will almost always produce an increase in the
YAM2 metric. The magnitude of these effects will be influenced by the
strength of the opponent. (It is also worth noting that the actual change
in ranking *placement* for any given team, as opposed to the ranking
*metric*, will be strongly influenced by the simultaneous changes in
records for "neighboring" teams in the ranking table.)
YAM2 = Win% * SOS
The SOS metric used in YAM2 is the same as that used in the original
RPI weighting factors: namely 2 parts Opp% added to 1 part Opp-Opp%. In
this implementation the SOS metric is normalized to the toughest schedule
for convenience.
