Thanks to Dave Hendrickson for alerting me to this. It is from
today's (Fri 01Mar96) Boston Globe, the header of Globe columnist Bob
Monahan's College Hockey Notebook.

Merrimack still at a loss
Facility, higher-profile schools are hindering Anderson's efforts
  by Bob Monahan

Merrimack coach Ron Anderson has a year to go on his contract, and
people close to the college scene plus fellow coaches feel he deserves
an extension despite his club's last-place Hockey East finish.

Anderson, a product of Boston University, is one of the most genial
coaches in the country, and his abilities are highly respected.

One of the main reasons for Merrimack's lack of success is its
facility, which is ranked last in Hockey East. Many recruits want to
play for Anderson, but not in Merrimack's rink.

Bruins scout Jean Ratelle said, "I never saw a Merrimack player who
didn't improve under Ron."

Until Merrimack gets a new facility on the planning table, there seems
little hope the program can reach the level of Boston University,
Maine, U Mass-Lowell or Providence.

In addition, many Greater Boston high school players are drawn to the
four Beanpot colleges - BU, Boston College, Northeastern and Harvard,
all of which have up-to-date facilities. Playing in the Beanpot is a
goal for hundreds of high school players. After that, players may
think of the Universities of New Hampshire or Massachusetts, which
have new rinks. Maine and Providence also have fine facilities, and U
Mass-Lowell is getting a new rink.

Anderson has done a fine job with his program. He needs help from the
Merrimack alumni and hierarchy.
