If you type it, you've written it.  Regardless of where it then travels, it
is protected by copyright law - even if you don't put a copyright notice on
it.  It's easier to protect yourself from copyright infringement if you put
a notice on it before you distribute it - and it's far easier if you send a
copy to the Copyright Office in DC (which is usually done for things like
books, stories, songs).  But it's not *necessary*.
 
To clarify:  The above paragraph is copyright 1995 by Jeffrey Anbinder.  If
you distribute it without attributing me, you're breaking the law.  This
would be true whether I'd said so or not.  Any questions?
 
One further comment:  My understanding is that if you post a copyrighted
poll, you're okay if you attribute the source.  All you're doing is quoting
somebody.  But you must attribute.
