NCAA lets school penalize itself
Article excerpts:
o coach, ad, and FAR all wore smiles and breathed easier
o tigers eligible for TV and post season play
o Coach Lucia Quotes
"It's nice it's not going to effect our team."
"Our team is not being penalized. They weren't
involved, shouldn't be penalized, and haven't been
penalized."
o CC will not appeal the restrictions
o A.D. Taylor Quotes
"We accept the NCAA's decision."
"We plan to put this behind us and move ahead."
o CC's new president, Kathryn Moorman Quotes
"It [athletics] is an integral part of the
liberal-arts education at CC -- we care about the
students on our teams, and their academic success."
"We do not intend to appear before the NCAA again."
o Owens' involvement
Owens was involved in the incident, but at Buetow's
behest. Lucia said, "We'll get through it; he'll get
through it. The degree he was involved was very
small. I thought the NCAA was fair."
o Buetow had brought the program under NCAA scrutiny with two
separate incidents in the 92-93 season. He illegally
transferred school funds and then broke NCAA rules in what
he claimed was a botched attempt to land a junior-college
goaltender in midseason.
CC forced Buetow out at the end of the 92-93 season, and
that, alongg with the school reporting itself to the NCAA,
put the sanctioning body in a lenient mood.
o Captain Senior Kent Fearns Quote
"It's good it's over before next year so we don't have
to deal with it. We're looking forward to putting all
that stuff behind us and getting on with the future."
o David Swank, chairman of the NCAA committee on infractions Quote
"...Buetow let the situation get out of hand..."
"Had the head coach reported this, this probably would
have been a secondary violation."
"But he did not, and two other violations were
discovered by CC."
